Problems to Solve...
- Homestay owners and students might have different expectations about the homestay. To avoid frustration and confusion, students and hosts should discuss their expectations openly and directly at the beginning of the homestead.
- Because of cultural differences, or for fear of hurting the host's feelings, a student may feel afraid to discuss a problemIn these cases, students can easily discuss these issues with their Homestay Coordinator.
- Some U.S. family members seem "too busy" to spend time with the student. If this is the case, the student should ask their Homestay Coordinator to find another homestay for them.
- Students may be uncertain when or whether to ask hosts for help with shopping, transportation, etc. If you plan in advance and ask your host in advance, this should not be a problem.
You cannot choose your students, per say. You are required to accept each student who signs up for your classes. However there are several ways of attracting the type of students you prefer to sign up for your classes.
A. If you prefer adults you may emphasis personal and professional experiences, in addition to scholarly achievements, that would be exclusively appreciated by a corporate or adult clientel.
- You may also indicate in your Preferences inside your Personal Professor Profile that you specialize in the particular age group that you prefer.
- Emphasize, as well, through your course listings, courses that an adult would be interested in following.
- Many adults need help preparing for job interviews or exams such as the TOEIC, TOEFL, IELTS, SAT and GMAT (for English Teachers) other need to prepare for a job or vacation abroad. If you have any experience teaching these subjects, don't forget to mention it in your English@laCarte Personal Professor Profile information.
- Remember that you need to sell yourself and your experiences.
- Don't neglect the importance of using descriptive adjectives and detail in order to help the student understand the level of knowledge and expertize that you are capable of providing.
- Through using these marketing strategies, you will surely attract the type of student that you prefer.
B. If you prefer teaching children, you may also adapt your profile information to attract a younger student population.
- Emphasize your experience working with children, as well as diplomas or certificates that exemplify your knowledge of children's psychology or children's learning capacities.
- Mention each professional or other work experience that would encourage a parent to select you as his or her child's Personal Professor.
- If you like teaching very young children you can emphasize the fun nature of your classes. Perhaps you use "play" in your teaching such as songs, dance, painting, coloring, storytelling, books, etc.
- If you like teaching teenagers, you should mention your familiarity with the class programs and the specificities of the age group that you would like to teach.
- The more you can reassure a parent of your success in the past with children, the more likely a parent will trust you in the future with his or her child.

You choose your salary when you work for English@laCarte. You indicate the salary that you would like to be paid per hour and we pay you that hourly wage. You will notice, however, that the salary per hour that appears on English@laCarte's website is higher than the salary that you will receive. This is because we must pay our administrative fees (overhead, taxes, accounting, secretarial, telephone, property, employee social charges, advertising, etc.) as well as your services.
If you are based in France, you can be an Independant Worker with a SIRET number. You will be required to pay your own social charges, and English@laCarte will offer you a higher per hour wage. You choose the amount of time that you would like to teach per week. However English@laCarte requires each Professor to be available a minimum of 5 hours per week. You may, however, work for English@lacart as many hours as you like. We do not fix an hourly limit. Some of our Professors choose to work for us on a full time basis and others choose to work for us just a few hours a week for some complimentary income. Keep in mind that Professors who indicate significant availability are more likely to maximize their likelihood of being chosen by students. Students also tend to sign up for weekly classes at the same time and on the same day each week.
There is no maximum time limit to your contract with English@laCarte. You may work for us as long as you like. You must, however, be availble for a minimum ten week period in order to receive new students.
If you no longer would like to work for English@laCarte you are required to inform us ten weeks before your last day. We will then erase your account. This is in order to insure that all of the students who have signed up for classes with you will have finished their English@laCarte Learning Program.

" I love my American family! Their home is my second home. " - a French student living in a Boston homestead.
It is an opportunity to experience the life-style and culture found in the U.S.A. by living with a family.
Each year, thousands of U.S. families open their homes and their hearts to visitors from all over the world. Most homestays are arranged by universities, intensive English institutes, or international educational exchange organizations. In a homestay, a student can observe, learn and experience a new life-style and culture, while practicing English skills in a family home. People of all ages participate in homestays. Some come alone, others come in groups accompanied by leaders. Husbands and wives come, some bringing their children.
A. The first copy of your documents will be kept exclusively for our administrative and accounting records. The second copy of documents will be seen by our students in order to help them best choose their Host Family. Our students feel more secure choosing a Professor who's experience has been validated by professional experience and degrees and other information.
B. The English@lacarte Team also requires each Host Family to upload a second copy of his CV, Letter of Motivation, Work Experience, National Identity Card, and University Degree(s) onto our website with his personal information completely blotted out with a thick and heavy black magic marker. This is to protect your privacy. No potential student will have access to your private information before purchasing a Home Stay program with you.

What makes homestays special is the daily experience of living with hosts who want to share their way of life. Hosts involve their guests in their day-to-day activities, introduce them to their relatives and neighbors, and include them in family functions like summertime barbeques, holiday celebrations, and trips to local tourist attractions.
Schools and homestay organizations can arrange short-term, semester or year long stays. In some programs, students live in the dormitory or residence hall during the week and spend weekends and holidays with their assigned families.
Usually, international visitors or students enjoy staying with families having family members of similar ages or with similar interests. Here at the English@lacarte, we encourage our families to offer homestays for years and years, with some developing such close relationships that they later travel to their students' home countries to meet their families.
We find that successful homestay experiences help ease homesickness for English@lacarte students, who realize they have found a second family who loves and cares for them. Other students sing the praises of homestays because of the opportunity to improve their English skills and the chance to be immersed in American culture, rather than simply reading about it in class.
Homestays always require some adjustments. You might have expectations about meals, curfew, internet and telephone usage, laundry, television viewing, household chores, and money matters. For Universities offering homestays, it's important to set standards for approving families who will participate in the program. Families must also provide students with furnished rooms, complete with desks, and make the students feel welcome in the home.
We offer three levels of meal plans in our homestays :
- Traditional : all meals but lunches on school days provided.
- Bed and Breakfast : self-serve breakfast provided seven days a week.
- No Meals : the students prepare their own meals in the homestay kitchen. Homestay hosts take them to the grocery store every week.
Communication between the homestay owner and the international student is KEY to creating a good homestay experience.
Your homestay family will be interested in your country and family. Bring photographs of your town, school, friends and family. If you wish, also bring small gifts that are typical of your country.
